Discussion of changes in Labor
Summary:
The Commission requested an analysis of the changes in the labor force comparing this year versus prior years. The chart below provides data for hires and terminations. For comparison, the data in the attachment provides macro-economic data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics both for the nation and for the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metroplex (SPCM). The SPCM is beyond full employment with an unemployment rate of 3.4%, nearly a full percent lower than what is considered full employment (4.1% to 4.7% unemployment). All employment sectors saw an average 5.8% increase in employment over the prior 12 months, except for the government sector which saw an average decrease of 1.3% employment.
