Discussion of Permit Fees in Response to Hurricane Helene
Summary:
The storm surge from,Hurricane Helene made landfall in our area on Saturday, September 26, 2024 at 11:10 P.M. Low lying areas of the town, mainly the fingers in Evacuation Zone A, were inundated with the storm surge causing significant damage to homes and properties
To encourage rebuilding our community, staff recommends waiving demolition fees for properties on the fingers, as well as waiving permit fees for new construction fees up to a $500,000 project valuation. Staff recommends this waiver for 3 months, at which point the Commission can evaluate the need for an extension of time if needed.

Recommendation: Staff recommends approval of a temporary fee waiver of demolition and new construction fees for properties on the fingers affected by Hurricane Helene.
Proposed Motion: I move approval of a temporary waiver for demolition and new construction building permit fees for properties in Evacuation Zone A which were inundated by the surge from Hurricane Helene with project values up to $500,000.00 and that the waiver expire on January 2, 2025.
