Discussion of Historic Medallions

This item is a continued discussion for the design and procurement of historic medallions for homes on Belleair’s Historic Registry.

Previous Commission Action: At the February Historic Preservation Board meeting, the Board reviewed several designs are requested additional information from staff on the following options for the medallions:
1. Pricing options for sizes larger than 4 x 6 inches
2. Mock-ups with the top line of text both in an arc and straight across
3. Options for copper materials instead of bronze, if possible
4. Information on options for custom “EST” year-built tags
Background/Problem Discussion: Below are staff’s responses to the four categories listed above, as requested by the Board.
1. Pricing options: Below is a breakdown of pricing for both rectangular and circular options from one of our signage vendors, International Bronze:
a. Rectangular
i. 5 x 7 inches: $185.00 each ($150.00 each if 10 or more bought at once)
ii. 6 x 8 inches: $245.00 each ($215.00 each if 10 or more bought at once)
iii. 8 x 10 inches: $375.00 each ($340.00 each if 10 or more bought at once)
b. Circular
i. 7-inch diameter: $245.00 each ($200.00 if 10 or more are bought at once)
ii. 8-inch diameter: $315.00 each ($285.00 if 10 or more are bought at once)
iii. 10-inch diameter: $440.00 each ($400.00 if 10 or more are bought at once)
2. Mock-ups: Please see the attached three mock-ups, as produced by our vendor.
3. Copper: International Bronze does not service cast copper plaques, and companies that do tend to charge much more than the above quotes for the material.
4. EST tags: Staff did speak to vendors about the option of adding tags for the “EST” sections; however, casting two separate pieces was vastly more expensive than simply ordering custom plaques with custom years. This option is what is quoted for above.
Expenditure Challenges Following input from the Historic Preservation Board on shape and size options for the historic medallions, the Town Commission will discuss funding options for the medallions. This may include requiring residents to pay for their own medallions, having the Town pay for them, or a blend of the two.
