Decision Package: Special Events Coordinator
Summary:
Staff is requesting to reestablish the Special Events Coordinator position, which was originally under the Parks, Recreation, and Streets department (presently Recreation Department). The position was dissolved in 2021, and the allocation was absorbed in the General Fund. The historic staffing levels in the Rec Department are as follows:

At this time, the expected level of service is unsustainable. The programming for adults and children has become more robust, and the increased work to produce events requires more staff bandwidth as well.
Certain annual events, such as Skeleton Trail, Holiday Parade & Party or Santa Gift Delivery, plus the growing popularity of Pickleball and Wiffleball Tournaments, make it hard to achieve sustainable levels of program services. With the addition of a Special Events Coordinator, Belleair Rec can continue to staff holiday events, as well as provide the robust programming that is currently expected.

Previous Commission Action: Preliminary budget discussions.
Expenditure Challenges: Estimated salary of $50,000. With benefits included, the position is estimated to total $72,000, however that cost will be reduced when some of the occasional labor expenditures are eliminated.

Recommendation: Staff is recommending the inclusion of the Special Events Coordinator in the 2024-2025 budget to be presented to the Commission.
